Lepidolite Bracelet 3"

The micas are an important group of minerals. Micas are significant rock forming minerals being found in all three rock types: igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. The term "mica" is so familiar to the general public that it is often considered a mineral in itself. Of course it is actually a group of minerals and most people who are knowledgeable about minerals know the three most common mica minerals: muscovite, biotite, and lepidolite. The Mica Group is actually a rather large group of minerals with over 30 members.
Large crystals of mica used for various applications are typically mined from granitic pegmatites. Mica grows by building up see-through paper-thin layers upon layers, which appear opaque but are in fact transparent. Mica is very metallic (containing very reactive element metals such as Potassium and Lithium, as well as Aluminium and Silica) and can be cold to touch. Mica occurs semi-translucent crystals, either flat angular blades, or rosettes or even hexagonal thin columns.

Lepidolite is a potassium lithium aluminium silicate hydroxide fluoride mineral that belongs to the Mica group. Lepidolite is an ore of lithium and forms in granitic masses that contain a substantial amount of lithium. Lepidolite, like other micas, has a layered structure. These transparent to translucent crystals occur as violet to pale pink or white and rarely grey or yellow in colour and has a vitreous to pearly lustre.
They form as tabular to prismatic crystals with a prominent pinacoid termination. Lepidolite's four prism faces and two pinacoid faces form pseudo-hexagonal crystal "books". The sides of the crystal often tend to tapper. The cleavage sheets are flexible and elastic, meaning they can be bent and will flex back to original shape. Also some specimens may show triboluminescence.
Lepidolite can be found in Brazil, Russia; several African localities and the USA.
